Google Ads CPC checker

A Google Ads click costs what it takes to win the auction for that search, so the price depends on the keyword and the country. In United States, a click on emergency plumber averages $76.38. At these prices, one wrong search is an expensive click. PPCleaner reads your search terms every night and blocks the ones that were never going to buy, so the budget goes to the searches that do.

How much does a click cost on Google Ads?

A click costs whatever it takes to win the auction for that search, so it varies by keyword, country and competition rather than by a fixed price list. The same week, a click can cost under $1 on a niche product search and $76.38 on emergency plumber in United States, as the example above shows. The only reliable answer is the one for your own keyword.

You never pay your maximum bid. Google charges just enough to beat the advertiser below you, adjusted by ad quality, which is why two advertisers on the same keyword pay different prices.

How to read the results

  • Average CPC: what advertisers paid on average for a click on this keyword over the last twelve months.
  • Top-of-page bid range: Google's estimate of the bid needed to appear above the organic results, from the low end (20th percentile) to the high end (80th percentile).
  • Monthly searches: the average number of searches per month for that country, rounded by Google.
  • Competition: how many advertisers bid on the keyword compared with others. High competition does not always mean a high CPC, and the reverse.

How to lower your cost per click

  1. Block the searches that never buy. Every click from a job seeker, a student or someone looking for a free version is paid at the same price. Adding them as negative keywords is the fastest saving in most accounts.
  2. Tighten match types. Phrase and exact match keep your ads on the searches you meant. Broad match reaches further, and pays for it.
  3. Improve ad relevance. A higher Quality Score lowers the price you pay to keep the same position.
  4. Check your break-even. A high CPC is fine if the customer is worth it. Our ROAS calculator shows the return you need to stay profitable.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good CPC for Google Ads?

A good CPC is one your conversion rate and margin can pay for. If 1 click in 20 becomes a customer worth $300 in margin, you can afford up to $15 a click and still break even. Compare the CPC with what a customer is worth to you, not with another industry.

Why is my CPC higher than the average shown here?

The average covers every advertiser on the keyword. Your own CPC also depends on your Quality Score, your ad position, the devices and hours you target, and your bidding strategy.

Where does the data come from?

From Google's Keyword Planner, through the DataForSEO API. Figures are twelve-month averages for the country you pick, shown in US dollars.

Which countries can I check?

22 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, the main European markets, Brazil, Mexico and Turkey.

Why is there a limit of 5 lookups a day?

Each fresh lookup queries Google's data and has a real cost. Searches someone else already made are served from a cache and do not count.
