What is a negative keyword?
A negative keyword tells Google Ads not to show your ad when a search contains that word or phrase. If you sell roof repairs, adding jobs as a negative keeps your ad away from people searching “roofing jobs near me”, who click but never buy. Every click you avoid this way is budget left for searches that can convert.
How the generator works
- It reads your website. Your products or services, who you sell to and where you work.
- It writes negatives for your business only. Job seekers, free and do-it-yourself searches, other meanings of your words, places you don’t serve. Words that describe what you sell are never suggested.
- It explains each one. A match type, a priority and the reason, so you choose what goes into your account.
Negative keyword match types
| Match type | Syntax | Blocks |
|---|---|---|
| Broad | free tutorial | Searches with all the words, in any order |
| Phrase | "free tutorial" | Searches with these words, in this order |
| Exact | [free tutorial] | This exact search only |
Unlike regular keywords, negatives don’t cover close variants: excluding course doesn’t exclude courses. Add singular, plural and synonyms yourself, or let the search terms report show you which ones appear.
Frequently asked questions
Is the negative keyword generator really free?
Yes. You get the full list, can copy it and export it as a CSV without creating an account, without a credit card and without connecting Google Ads. Getting the report by email is optional.
Do you need access to my Google Ads account?
No. The generator only reads your public website. It never connects to Google Ads and never changes anything in your account: you decide what to add.
How do I add negative keywords in Google Ads?
Open the campaign, go to Keywords, then Negative keywords, and paste the list. Keep the syntax: a plain word is broad match, "quotes" are phrase match, [brackets] are exact match. To reuse the same negatives across campaigns, create a negative keyword list in the Shared library and apply it to those campaigns. The CSV is laid out for Google Ads Editor.
Can a negative keyword block searches that would have converted?
Yes, which is why each suggestion comes with a reason and a priority. High-priority ones are clearly off-target for your business; the ones marked Review depend on how you sell and should be checked against your account before you add them.
How is this different from PPCleaner?
The generator builds a starting list from your website, once. PPCleaner reads the search terms that actually trigger your ads, every day, and blocks the ones that waste budget, with your approval. Every block can be undone.
